Preparing for a new sibling

This is my favorite book right now, as it really gets at ways my daughter can be a "big helper" while also stressing how much mommy and daddy love her.

My biggest worry about this new baby has to do with how my three-year-old is going to take it (although the closer I get to my due date, the higher labor ranks on the list!). I want her to love this new baby, and I don’t want her to feel replaced. I’d like to [Read On]

The Pioneer Woman’s Cinnamon Rolls

Waiting for Connor

I recently purchased “The Pioneer Woman Cooks” to have something to read while I waited to pick Connor up from school.   Or it may have been because I didn’t have any cash in my wallet and I didn’t want to pull out my check card for one doughnut.  After today’s experiences, I’m beginning to think [Read On]

I belong to three monthly book clubs. Three. My love for reading and discussing great literature knows no bounds except that of my life. I don’t get to read everything I want in the time frame in which I want. I’m one of those few people who can speed read and still retain everything – [Read On]

And the coolest bookstore award goes to…

-1

The coolest bookstore in the world is located in downtown Rochester, Minn. You’ll agree with me as soon as you step inside.   My friends and I stumbled into the bookstore while walking through Rochester’s skyways last winter. We rounded a corner and suddenly we were inside a French castle, filled with books. Our mouths [Read On]

Up close and personal with a famous author — well, does being in the audience count?

Leslie Marmon Silko speaks in Minneapolis on Oct. 20, 2011. The Native American woman is author of several books, including "Ceremony," which has sold 1 million copies.

Leslie Marmon Silko on YouTube What I have always loved about the city is the opportunities to see amazing theatrical performances, hear live music and listen to talented authors. We certainly got talent in Cambridge, but there’s a lot more of it in the Twin Cities.   Recently I had the opportunity to hear Leslie [Read On]

You never ‘get over it’

Grief

Pain and sorrow are things we don’t often let ourselves feel, and in our fast-food culture we think we should be over it by the time our loved one is in the ground. But the one thing the suicide of my friend’s husband taught me is that grief doesn’t end in a month or even [Read On]

Barefoot on the beach part 1

DestinationBrideBarefeet

I’ve never been the kind of girl who dreamed about getting married in a church.   No, a blue sky held more allure than vaulted ceilings. A carefree ceremony called to me more than a regimented order of processional, vows, rings, unity candle and recessional. An intimate gathering held more meaning than a large, lavish [Read On]

Get Out! New Ulm: Author’s wacky house 4 of 4

Don't miss touring the Wanda Gag house in New Ulm when you go. The interior paint is wild and wacky.

Jaunt down to New Ulm, Minn. this summer. You won’t be disappointed. There’s a ton of stuff to do. (This is the fourth and final post in a series.) WANDA GAG HOUSE   Ever read “Millions of Cats” as a child? I read it to my daughter because she loves cats as much as I [Read On]

Here are the things I recommend: • Healing Body Butter by Olsen Naturals, $15 http://www.olsennaturals.com/catalog/i27.html I stumbled upon this stuff in the first few months of my pregnancy while browsing through the Mill City Farmer’s Market. I’ve used it for a million things. It is fantastic! It kept stretch marks at bay; I applied it [Read On]

DIY Expand your book shelves

These 8-inch-wide shelves are perfect for paperbacks. I love that the shelves take advantage of dead space on the wall.

When we moved into our new house, my bookshelves didn’t work like they had in the old house. The one that had been custom-made for our upstairs hallway only fit on one wall in my daughter’s room. That meant I had roughly 100 books without a home. That simply wouldn’t do.   But I wasn’t [Read On]
