Water Park of America: worth the price

My toddler loved the Fort Snelling Zero Depth entry area with its three large water slides, bucket, fountains and numerous splash zones. The water slides were large enough that adults could slide down, although you couldn't ride down with your kid.

If you’re looking for a thrill, check out the Family Raft Ride at Water Park of America. And the good news is you can bring the whole family on it, young to old. During a recent visit, we assumed that my 3-year-old wouldn’t be able to go on any of the waterslides outside the Fort [Read On]

Lifetime Fitness: anti-family fitness center?

Lifetime Fitness offers great programs for adults, but seem to think kids only belong in the childcare center, being inactive. Many of the facilities throughout the Twin Cities have been built in partnerships with cities, such as this location in Lakeville.

Although you’d expect a large fitness center like Lifetime Fitness to be pro-family, the opposite sure seems to be true. Sure, the facilities have childcare centers but that’s because they operate under the assumption that children should be kept away from the grown-ups. For a place that advocates for fitness, Lifetime Fitness offers very little [Read On]

Kids clothes for cheap

Go to one sale, and you'll fall in love...

I don’t believe in paying full price for anything. Because of that, I tend to gravitate to second-hand stores and consignment sales. My favorite place to pick up baby/kids clothes are the Just Between Friends sales here in the Twin Cities.   Every spring and fall I go and buy my daughter’s entire wardrobe for [Read On]

Coupons, cafes and coffee shops

Anoka Coffee -3

I have to confess something. If you give me a coupon, I will drive 30 miles out of my way to use it. I’m saving money! Really. (That’s what I tell myself…) My best friend was given a Happenings book in October, just a few weeks before all the coupons expired, and so we were [Read On]

So cool you’ll want to hang out there all day

Diamonds art-3

Diamonds Coffee Shop off University Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis reminds me of the coffee joints I used to hang out for hours on end while I was an undergraduate. The place is just plain cool. Billed as the “Atomic Coffee Shop,” the place caters to both gearheads with motorcycle/car shows and your average Joe looking [Read On]

Up close and personal with a famous author — well, does being in the audience count?

Leslie Marmon Silko speaks in Minneapolis on Oct. 20, 2011. The Native American woman is author of several books, including "Ceremony," which has sold 1 million copies.

Leslie Marmon Silko on YouTube What I have always loved about the city is the opportunities to see amazing theatrical performances, hear live music and listen to talented authors. We certainly got talent in Cambridge, but there’s a lot more of it in the Twin Cities.   Recently I had the opportunity to hear Leslie [Read On]

My first year as a city girl

This is one of bridges I love best in Minneapolis. It provides a way for those on the Greenway to travel safely across Hiawatha Avenue.

I have been a Minneapolis resident for one full year. I still haven’t eaten at all of the restaurants within a 10-block radius. Back home, I had not only eaten at all the restaurants in town, but I’d worked at half of them. I don’t have a favorite grocery store, although I’m narrowing my choices [Read On]

Get wet – outside water parks 1 of 2

IMG_1625sm

Water. Ah. That’s what summer is all about. Getting wet. Swimming. Splashing. Cooling off. I love summer and I love water parks. When it isn’t summer, I get my water fix by heading to an indoor pool. Over the past two-and-a-half years, my daughter and I have explored a lot of the water parks in [Read On]

Surprise proposal

This is where the boy I had known since high school asked me to marry him: The Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. My aunt gave us this painting by Nancy Patrick Carney for our wedding. It's up in our house to remind us of what a special role the bridge played in our lives.

It went like this… I’d just gotten back after a week in the Carribean on the island of St. Croix with my mom and aunt. So I hadn’t seen my boyfriend of 2 years in a week, and we decided to spend the whole weekend together. On Sunday, we went over to his parents in [Read On]
